When an Army of Gray Came to Save Texas by H. Gordon Pettey, Ph.D. - This is the true story of a group of volunteers from New Orleans who were recruited and outfitted by Adolphus Sterne of Nacogdoches. They rode on a steam boat to Natchitoches and walked to Nacogdoches in order to come to Texas to help fight for its freedom. They arrived in the Mexican town of Nacogdoches and were given a great banquet of bear, venison, raccoon, etc., etc. Then they rode out to their deaths at the Alamo, Goliad and less known places. This is a very interesting, though sad story of a group of men who fought for freedom, yet not one owned any part of Texas.. The leaders of Texas gave them credit for turning the tide during the battle against Santa Anna's Mexico. Both Sam Houston and Thomas J. Rusk said that they gave the Texans the will to win this war and credited them for its outcome. Printed on large 8½" x 11" paper.
