El Peregrino

El Peregrino - Often in history some of the personalities who should be given much credit are pushed aside to make room for those who were more flamboyant or politically connected. One of these was a quiet, humble man named Fr. Antonio Margil de Jesus. He changed much of the world and he was one of the true founders of Texas. His history in Mexico and Central America is many times better known and appreciated than his works in Texas. He literally founded the oldest town, Nacogdoches, but is not given credit for this. He established two more missions in the unsettled wilds of the East Texas frontier whose sites are now known as San Augustine, Texas and Robeline, Louisiana. He established one of the most beautiful missions in the United States in San Antonio, now simply known as “San Jose”. And yet, another mission that he is never given credit for is the missions of La Bahia (the bay) which he founded below present Victoria, later moved to Goliad. And all these accomplishments in Texas are but a fraction of those that he accomplished in Central America and Mexico where, among many things he did, he was responsible for the establishment of three religious colleges, two of which still operate. His dear friend and fellow missionary in East Texas was Fr. Felis Espinosa, who wrote the first authentic history of Fr. Margil. It is called El Peregrino—the Pilgrim. For the first time, this book is available in English.
