Angelina - The Little Indian Girl That Everyone Loved by H. Gordon Pettey, Ph.D. - Many think that she is a made-up character, but this is not true. She was a real person that was mentioned by many diarists who knew her and by her French lover, Bel Isle, who lived with her for one year and wrote about her in his memoirs. When she was a girl, she was the favorite of the early mission priests who called her "Little Angel" and after the last mission was closed in 1693, she and her family, along with some other tribal members, were led down to and across the Rio Grande to the San Juan Bautista mission where she was educated and learned to speak Spanish and French. She returned to her tribe in East Texas and became a sought-after interpreter being the only Indian woman ever allowed to smoke the peace pipe in council. She is well remembered today. There are many things named for her such as a river, a county, a college and many businesses. This is a fascinating read for girls as well as boys, both adult and juvenile.
